UC Irvine was established in 1965 as the ninth campus in the University of California system, the largest research university in the world. The UC system has 15,000 faculty researchers, carries out $4 billion in research annually and manages three Department of Energy National Laboratories (Lawrence Livermore, Lawrence Berkeley and Los Alamos).

Academic Programs
In 2005-2006 UCI awarded 5,370 bachelor degrees from eight schools in over 50 majors. A total of 1296 masters and doctorate degrees were awarded from the eight schools as well as the College of Health Sciences, Paul Merage School of Business and the Department of Education. In the fall of 2006, UCI accepted in first students in the Nursing, Pharmaceutical Sciences and Public Health programs in the newly established College of Health Sciences. Graduates from these three programs will help fill the growing number of health-care related jobs in the state.
In November, 2006, the UC Regents approved the establishment of a School of Law at UCI. UCI School of Law will be the first public law school in California in more than 40 years and only the second to exist in Southern California. It is expected to open its doors to its first class of law students in fall 2009.
Organized Research
UCI is home to 16 organized research units, 20 Campus research centers and 6 other research Centers and Institutes. UCI Distinctions & Highlights
- UCI is ranked the 12th best public university in U.S. News & World Report’s 2004 annual rankings.
- UCI is one of 62 universities in the U.S. and Canada elected to membership in the prestigious Association of American Universities.
- In a survey by Chemical and Engineering News, UCI tied with Harvard University for 15th place nationally in conferring doctoral degrees in chemistry. UCI also awarded 97 bachelor's degrees in chemistry – for second place nationally.
- Since 1995, U.S. News & World Report has ranked 22 of UCI's graduate programs and specialties among the top 50 in the nation.
Industry Collaborations
Since the establishment of OTA in 1990, UCI industry awards for basic and clinical research have grown from $4 million to $31 million in 2006. UCI’s national ranking for industry sponsored research has grown from 109th in 1991 - 1992 to 38th in FY 2001, per the National Science Foundation.
Over forty start-up companies have been formed since 1987 based on UCI technology in software, pharmaceuticals, diagnostics, biomedical engineering, imaging, energy and many other areas. As of March, 2007, 34 start-up companies are still active with another 3 having been acquired. Four companies are currently in development.
At the end of FY 2006, OTA had 76 signed license or option agreements transferring rights to 159 inventions. UCI had 216 inventions with issued U.S. The technology portfolio consists of more than 600 cases with over100 new inventions being disclosed annually.
